I. Copyrights
First of all, the musicdisk in itself is FREE, i.e. absolutely NO
MONEY should be charged for copies of it. If you want to include
the musicdisk in any kind of commercially available package, like a
Shareware CD for instance, you should contact the authors before
doing so (see contact information below).
We emphasize strongly that the music contained in this production
is also FREE - some samples are taken from various commercial CDs,
however, and the copyright to these belong to the respective
companies.
Although we have used samples from different commercial artists we
DO NOT in ANY WAY represent the artists or their work.
*******************************************************************
Sublevel 3 holds the full copyright of the SUBMERGED-files (that is
the executables and text files) and all the songs (but as mentioned
above, NOT the samples). You are allowed to copy, use and spread it
freely (no money charged).
Submerged Copyright (c)1996 Sublevel 3
*******************************************************************
The musicdisk uses the great MIDAS Sound System for music playback.
The MIDAS Sound System is a copyright of Petteri Kangaslampi and
Jarno Paananen. They can be contacted at:
pekangas@sci.fi (P.Kangaslampi)
jpaana@kauhajoki.fi (J.Paananen)
The absolutely latest MIDAS version should always be available at:
ftp.cdrom.com, /pub/msdos/demos/incoming/music
and x2ftp.oulu.fi.
For "Submerged" we have used MIDAS version 0.40a, but note that a
newer and better version (v0.50) is about to be released.

II. Introduction
Submerge - 1. To plunge, sink, or dive or cause (something) to plunge,
sink or dive below the surface of water or other liquid.
(Collins English Dictionary)
Probably no other form of media can communicate emotions like the way
music does. The music describes strange and organic worlds, express
feelings of sadness, or happiness and ultimately the wonders of the
universe; man's encounter with the infinite.
This compilation of music is our contribution to the ever growing mass
of people seeking peace & solitude through ambient techno music, and to
those of the international PC demo-scene and to all techno musicians.
Enjoy!
- Beacon of Sublevel 3

IV. Music Category
Although being a bit diffuse in its definition, the music category
is generally AMBIENT TECHNO - but some of the songs do not fit
into this category. Some of the songs are more or less JUNGLE and
BREAKBEAT, some TRANCE/RAVE some even in the direction of TRIPHOP
or DUB! Also a couple of the songs are classical inspired.
Looking at the samplelist in the musicdisk will give you an idea of
what kind of music we're making.
V. Equipment and Software Used to Make the Music
* Paradigma usually makes his music in SoundBlaster Studio v2.05, but
some of the tunes are made in ScreamTracker III. Some instruments
are sampled in FastTracker II.
He's also got some nifty equipment (though not used in any of the
SUBMERGED tunes):
Yamaha TX16W Digital Wave Filtering RackSampler
Yamaha TX81Z Synth Module
Roland PC100MKII Midi Keyboard
For MIDI-programming he use Cakewalk and Cubase for Windows.
Soundcard: Gravis Ultrasound 1MEG.
* Beacon uses FastTracker II for sampling, and ScreamTracker III in the
actual making. In some songs the TB-303 emulator GB-303 is used for
creating samples. Some samples are from a KORG-T3.
Soundcard: Gravis Ultrasound MAX 512K.
* X-Prodica composes music in ScreamTracker III and usually samples
from FastTracker II.
Soundcard: Soundblaster AWE 32 (8 MEGS).
He also has some other equipment:
Akai KII Digital Syntheziser
Art Pro-verb Digital Effects Processor
Zoom 9002 Digital FX Processor
For MIDI-programming he uses Cakewalk 4.0, Musicator 2.0 and
Orchestrator.
VI. System Requirements for SUBMERGED

3. Known errors (Errare humanum est, etc.)
3-1. Sound Errors
IN THE FIRST VERSION OF SUBMERGED OTHER CARDS THAN GUS WOULDN'T
WORK, BUT THE BUG IS NOW FIXED!!
Gravis Ultrasound (GUS) generates some noise when loading songs.
This is due to an error in the MIDAS system, as the example file
itself (i.e., the example file that came with the MIDAS package)
contains the same bug. Note that we have used MIDAS v0.40a, the
newer version (v0.50) was not available when we compiled the final
version of the musicdisk. Future updates WILL come!
3-2. General Errors
Sometimes MIDAS reports "File not found", meaning the config-file,
but the config-file is there! The problem is related to the MIDAS
system itself, and cannot be corrected until a new version of MIDAS
is released (This MIDAS version is 0.40a). Try rebooting.
System locks on some errors
This happens because when MIDAS detects an error, it immediately
exits to DOS before Submerged has unhooked miscellaneous interrupts
etc. This problem is only partially corrected (Beacon must both
code and compose music - and as you know: debugging takes time! :)
4. Troubleshooting
4-1. VESA Graphics
Q: When I start Submerged I get a garbled picture in the upper part
of the screen, what do I do?
A: Your graphics card has problems switching banks, probably because
the window granularity is other than 4 or 64 kb, or mode 101h is
not supported. Anyway, running a NEW version of UNIVBE (or similar
program - you may also load your own VESA/VBE driver) should
correct the problem.
Q: The mousepointer leaves garbage on the screen.
A: This problem is also related to bank switching problems. Try
running a NEW version of UNIVBE (or similar program) or, better
still, run the VESA-driver that came with your graphics card. If
this doesn't correct your problem, try running the driver with
different parameters (On new ATI-clone cards type for instance
"M64VBE VGA S").
4-2. Memory problems
Q: I don't have enough free base-mem to run Submerged.
A: You'll need about 590-605 kb of free conventional memory to run
Submerged. Try removing some TSR-drivers, or run a memory
optimization program like QEMM OPTIMIZE or MEMMAKER.
Q: On some of the songs, Submerged exits to DOS with a "not enough
memory"-error.
A: This error occurs because you don't have enough free base-memory
to hold the entire tune in memory at once. Try freeing up more
memory. Remember that if Surround Sound output is enabled, the
tune occupies TWICE the amount of memory than usual.
4-3. Mouse problems
Q: The mouse snaps to a pretty big grid in the musicdisk.
A: This happens because the resolution of your mouse is set too low.
Try adjusting the resolution using your mouse driver software,
or try running Submerged with another mousedriver.
Q: The mouse messes up the screen.
A: This is due to the VESA bank switching. See VESA graphics.
4-4. Other problems
Q: When I run Submerged, it just quits do DOS and displays the
error message "Invalid File Handle".
A: Something is wrong with the configuration. Either you have
configured wrong, or the config file SUBMERGE.CFG is faulty,
or Submerged couldn't save to the config file.
Running "SUBMERGE AUTO" should correct the problem.
5. Credits for Submerged:
Main code: Beacon
Music: Paradigma, X-Prodica and Beacon
Graphics: Keiichi
Mouseroutines: Ragnar and Beacon
Liquid analyzer effects: ne0tek and Beacon
Main net management: Eclat and Keiichi
Submerged was programmed using Borland Turbo Assembler and Borland
Turbo Pascal v7.0. The graphics were made using Adobe Photoshop v3.0.5
with Kai's Powertools v2.0. The picture in the greetings screen was
handdrawn by Keiichi. He used an Rotring Easyliner ink pen and plain
A4 paper. For scanning we used Adobe Photoshop v3.0.5 and HP Deskjet
IIc scanner. To stay awake we drank Dr.Pepper and Jolt Cola.
6. Greetings
